Default The referees

The referees are drawn from the six continental federations that operate under FIFA's umbrella, but, as with the spread of teams involved, the allocation is not strictly equal, with some confederations providing more than others.

- AFC (Asian Football Confederation) will be represented by 6 referees
- CAF (Confederation of African Football) will have 6 referees
- CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) will have 6 referees
- CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) will have 6 referees
- OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) will have 2 referees
- UEFA (Union of European Football Associations ) will have 10 referees.

There is also the matter that there will be no referee from Great Britain since WC 1938 i think. Mark Clattenburg (you might remember him at the champions league final when he was shaking his head while Pepe was trying to win an Oscar ) was no more available as he forfeited his place when he left his job at Premier League and moved to Saudi Arabia. The FA attempted to replace Clattenburg but its request was rejected by Fifa. The truth however is that England doesn't have a big number of referees qualify for games under FIFA.

According to reports, the most experienced and qualified referees will be paid $70,000 for their services at the World Cup with a further $3,000 per game officiated.

Assistant referees will receive a lower fee of $25,000 with an extra $2,000 per game.

The reasoning for choosing those referees were (according to FIFA): “based on each referee’s skills and personality. The Commission also put into consideration each referee’s level of understanding of football and ability to read both the game and the various tactics employed by teams’’.

Something that happened 4 days ago: Referee Fahad Al Mirdasi (Saudi Arabia) who was at first among the selected refereed for this WC, has been banned for life from the Saudi FA (his assistants also) and replaced by UAE referees by FIFA. The reason for banning him was "match fixing" as Saudi Arabia's FA says Al Mirdasi asked for money to help Al-Hittihad win the King's Cup final with Al-Faisaly

Thanks man this is very useful!Let's hope that we will be able to make some profit on bookings When the stakes are high there should be tension and if the lines are fair that is possible

Let's not forget the VAR system that will be in place.

Potentially it could increase the number of yellow/red cards if VAR is reviewing off the ball incidents that may be missed by the referee and on field assistants.

Referees that have been announced for the second games so far. I'm posting them here since the threads are not open yet.

Russia - Egypt
Referee: Enrique Cáceres (PAR)

Portugal - Morocco
Referee: Mark Geiger (USA)

Uruguay - Saudi Arabia
Referee: Clément Turpin (FRA)

Iran - Spain
Referee: Andrés Cunha (URU)

Note1: Finally Caceres. Too bad he is n a game where host is playing

Note2: Turpin is the first UEFA referee whose national team is playing.

Note3: Geiger being appointed for Morocco v Portugal should rate this game as an important one. Morocco got Cakir at their first game, can't say they are very lucky

So far I must say refereeing is fantastic, very little mistakes, they are not using cards, really top notch!

For tomorrow's games

Denmark - Australia
Referee: Antonio Mateu Lahoz (ESP)

France - Peru
Referee: Mohammed Abdulla Mohamed (UAE)

Argentina - Croatia
Referee: Ravshan Irmatov (UZB)

The referee at France v Peru is the one who replaced the Saudi Arabia one (see above). Not sure if he is the best for this game unless FIFA had plans anyway to put a referee from a certain federation. Knowing how both play, this can be a tense game and hope Mohammed be able to handle it. Risky choice or we will see a Brazil v Switzerland again

Referees for 22.06

Brazil - Costa Rica
Referee: Björn Kuipers (NED)

Nigeria - Iceland
Referee: Matthew Conger (NZL)

Serbia - Switzerland
Referee: Felix Brych (GER)

Note: There will or are already some talks out there for Conger. In world cup 2014 and at the game Nigeria v Bosnia (against a european team that is, as it is now also), the referees were from OFC federation like now. Does the name O'Leary mean anything to you? Yes, he was the referee of that game and he was also from OFC. There was a picture back then on internet with him and the Nigerian keeper
.

The whole talks started after a bad decision he made (assistant showed offside and Bosnian goal was cancelled). I'm not pointing to something dirty, but with this background, let's see what Conger will do.

P.S.: Around 25.000 people were signing for FIFA to drop him, and he got some death threads. He is a teacher now in a small school

Geiger? ok

How about German referee (Brych) at the previous game of Switzerland vs Serbia where Serbians had complains that the ref was talking in German language to Swiss players and Serbians couldn't understand a word? They were asking the ref to speak English so they could understand but nooooo...they continue in German.

Now Switzerland is getting a referee from France... For those who don't know, official languages in Switzerland are German, French and Italian. For those who don't know also, Infantino (President of FIFA) has double citizenship, Italian and Swiss. Also, Massimo Busacca (former referee and currently Head of FIFA Refereeing) is also from Switzerland.

What's next for this game? Italians at VAR?

I wrote again for wrong appointments that have been made (Mexican referee at Brazil when Mexico is crossing ways with them at last 16) but hey, there is no shame as it seems. And right after what happened with Brych

Brych is a typical German pompous prick... he got instructions from VAR to check the situation on Mitrovi***263; and simply ignored it.. I hope that twas his last match on this WC...

Notwithstanding VAR, I've got the impression that the referees still have a lot - too much - impact on the outcomes of games. Take this prick Brych. What the hell was FIFA thinking anyway? It's only the Swiss that think they have no affinity or commonality with Germany. I suspect Brych was biased... Another clown is Wilmar Roldan who refereed Egypt versus Saudi... Why was he even there? In Brazil in 2014 he bizarrely disallowed 2 Mexican goals for offside against Cameroon. In England versus Tunisia he failed to award England 2 legitimate penalties and in Saudi versus Egypt he awarded Saudi 2 very soft penalties. To me it looked like he was just waiting for an opportunity to award Saudi a penalty. I would not at all be surprised if the Saudis bribed him... So notwithstanding VAR, you've still got some of the same hanky panky as before, especially with the likes of Roldan.

There has been one change regarding Serbia v Brazil.

At first, Shukralla (BHR) was the fourth official and now Jair Marrufo (USA) has been appointed. Jair is of Mexican descent lol

To be serious, i don't know why this change as i don't expect Shukralla to get any other at the rest of group stage games.

No, erase the above. Referees for last games came out and Shukralla is the main referee at Panama v Tunisia. Irmatov was firstly to replace Shukralla but at the end, Marrufo was appointed.

Referees for 28/06

Japan v Poland
Referee: Janny SIKAZWE (ZAM)

Senegal v Colombia
Referee: Milorad MAZIC (SRB)

Panama v Tunisia
Referee: Nawaf SHUKRALLA (BHR)

England v Belgium
Referee: Damir SKOMINA (SVN)

Live now (a little late tho since it started more than an hour ago) but they should have a video about it later. Collina and Busacca talking about how the referees did so far in group stages. Collina said 95.5% right () and with VAR it went up to 99.3%.

KO stage 30.01

France - Argentina
Referee: Alireza Faghani (IRN)
Assistant Referee 1: Reza Sokhandan (IRN)
Assistant Referee 2: Mohammadreza Mansouri (IRN)
Fourth Official: Julio Bascuñán (CHI)
Fifth Official: Christian Schiemann (CHI)

Uruguay - Portugal
Referee: César Ramos (MEX)
Assistant Referee 1: Marvin Torrentera (MEX)
Assistant Referee 2: Miguel Hernández (MEX)
Fourth Official: Jair Marufo (USA)
Fifth Official: Corey Rockwell (USA)

Note: I wrote somewhere above that i expected Faghani to play at big games but not so soon... He whistled just two days ago so not much time for resting. Normally he should be fit and well, but so soon, i give 2% to be effected either in fitness or in mental resting at some point. Mind that referees need to prepare also for their next games regarding notes, who is playing how, which players have yellow cards etc etc, everything is on the table. The good thing is that he didn't had to travel much from his last game.

Note2: Ramos whistled Uruguay v Portugal U20 WC in 2017. Big game for him this one, but i'm not sure if he can handle it as i expect it to be a very hard one since both pay attention in defense. For the history, he did handled well the U20 game.

Note3: If Faghani do well here, he will be candidate for third place game in my opinion. So pay attention to him on how he whistles.

Note4: Fourth and Fifth referees at France v Argentina are from Chile... They are neighbor countries for f*** sake This means that, if Faghani wont be able to start or continue the game at some point, then the neighbor Chilean will whistle for Argentina.
