General picks: Sheffield United vs. Sheffield Wednesday (+0,5) AH

Posted by Macot (2018-01-11 23:51 CET)

These odds are great and are far from what we will see tomorrow. One of the hottest derbies in England will be played in Sheffield.

I can understand bookmakers, United are hot this season and although they are newly promoted from League 1, they look to be set for another promotion which would end their frustrations after that unlucky relegation, when West Ham should be evicted from Premier League, but instead Sheffield United needed to go down. Blades are now finally strong again and will be very confident in front of this match.

But Wednesday should not be underestimated. They were fighting for promotion in the last 3 years or so and had some near misses. This season they are not so strong, but I expect them to improve now when they appointed new manager in Jos Luhukay. I remember him as a solid coach from bundesliga, a very expirienced one, whe is a calm type that will be able to settle the team and I expect improvements.

Both teams are strong and Wednesday has a lot of reserve. Some missings, but this is a Derby. Players on both sides will fight till the end, my call is 1-1 draw!

Sheff Utd - Sheff Wed 1 (Unibet 1.75)

Steel City derby! For some reason, I've always liked Sheff Wednesday.

Despite fairly promising start (7th after seven rounds) Sheff Wed are currently 16th in Championship. Sheff Utd were in top three rounds 12 to 19, but lately form has not been that good (currently 7th).

Sheff Wed are having injury concerns. Luhukay will be without 9 first-team players.

Man Utd striker James Wilson joined Blades on loan and may make his debut today, Sheff Utd have made total three signings within first 10 days of the transfer window.

Because of the Sheff Wed poor form and injury concerns, Blades to take 3 points.

      Cardiff - Sunderland 1

Cardiff have had horrible run. Out of last 5 Championship fixtures they've lost 4. 16th Dec Cardiff managed to win Hull City at home 1-0. Despite awful form, Cardiff is still 3rd, and by winning Sunderland climbs to top two.

Sunderland is 24th, but lately they've been playing fairly decent football, by losing only 2 out of last 6 fixtures. Sunderland loaned from Chelsea centre-back Jake Clarke-Salter until the end of the season, the youngster could make his debut now. Sunderland is also without top scorer Lewis Grabban for the rest of the season.

I find it hard to believe that Sunderland could get even draw at away against Cardiff. Bluebirds to take 3 points.

        16:00 Hull City v Beading

Posted by Macot (2018-01-12 23:27 CET)

Well, I can see Hull City starting a positive streak at last. They are in dangerous waters in Championship and their KC Stadium was always their fortress. But this season, results there are not so convincing (4-4-5) which is the reason for their current position. The important thing is though, that they play against a very beatable oponent, who in Jap Stam has an inexpirienced manager who is not able to rise the level of their form. Beading are 0-2-4 in the last 6 league games and they are really playing poorly.

If anything, Hull are still scoring, although their only over lately in which they scored twice came against Fulham a couple of weeks ago (2-2). But at home their average of goals is 4,1 per game (!) and they score almost 2,5 per game on their own! Hull are still a capable side, they have changed manager a month and a half ago and I give a lot on their 1-0 away win in FA Cup last week. They are improving surely!

So, a match against Beading is coming in the right time! Guests are winless in God knows how many weeks, home team is a high scoring one at home and of course... you surely realise I am talking about their oponents Beading.. the reason is simple. Hull won 5 games this season in the League and one in the Cup and miracoulously all wins came against teams that start with letter B!! Burton, Bolton, Birmingham, Barnsley and Brentford in League and last week, Blackburn in the Cup!

So, why wouldn`t we be a bit superstitious, if they are winning against B`s let us imagine that tomorrow they play against - BEADING! My call is 3-1

16:00 Bristol City v Norwich City

Posted by Macot (2018-01-12 23:41 CET)

I have chosen another Championship game, this time I go for goals. Both teams are doing well now, although for majority of the season Norwich were in crisis. But for sure they will see their chance against distracted Bristol team, which is obviously (too) focused on League Cup semifinals against Manchester City, where in the first leg played fantastic match but lost 1-2 at the end. Now, it will be tough for them to focus on this match, which is very important for them, but Cup glory took some toll. Bristol are now winless in 4 games and before the Cup match they have lost to Aston Villa 0-5! But this result is only a blunder, as I said, Bristol are not used to such great games in short period of time and they could suffer for 3-4 more games, but when they are out of the Cup (or in the finals, who knows) they will be able to focus on their promotion effort again.

Norwich as I said improved their form and are now climbing the standings. Currently 13th they are unbeaten in the last 3 games and have an average of 2,2 goals (Bristol are at 2,7). Norwich are currently playing cold/hot regarding goals. Some unders and overs around.

But this will be a good chance for them to surprise Bristol defence, I can see another blunder from home side, defensive mistakes and an over where you would expect an under! My call is 1-3 away win!

16:00 Port Vale v Yeovil Town

Posted by Macot (2018-01-12 23:52 CET)

Well I don`t understand these odds, guests are a team with the highest average of goals in away games, so bookies got something wrong here IMO.

First of all, Port Vale improved a lot lately and their 0-1 losses away from home in the last two games are totally unimportant to me. They are a different beast at home where they managed three consecutive wins without conceding (and the last one was 4-9 trashing of leaders Luton!).

Their oponents Yeovil improved lately and will be worthy oponents. Currently 21st they have an average of 3,2 goals scored in their games, but away from home this average is almost 4 goals per game! They scored 2 goals per game on their own in the last 5 played, three were 2-0 wins, one was 1-2 loss and the other 3-4 loss...

I expect Vale to win this, but Yeovil to score, too. My call is 3-1!

16:00 East Thurrock v Chester City

Posted by Macot (2018-01-13 00:06 CET)

My final pick on English football will take us to FA Trophy. This is a very unpredictable competition, full of surprises. In this case for instance, East Thurrock who play National League South, eliminated Aldershot, one of the strongest National League teams 4-0 in previous round! Chester on the other side had problems against Fylde only winning at home after penalties.

Now they will need to travel to London suburbs and I am sure this match won`t be their priority. The situation in Chester is terrible: they are fighting against relegation which is a huge dissapointment for a Club that played League football for decades. They are 21st, inside relegation zone and although they are unbeaten in last three league games, I expect them to field a second string of players here. Simply, this Cup is not important and in a tough away game in London, they will have troubles anyway.

I expect Thurrock United to win this, my call is 2-1!

                Interesting bet here, Macot.
I don´t think Norwich got 3 goals in them, even with Bristol on a 4 game losing streak.

Bristol played well vs Man C in midweek, but will have 3 days less rest than Norwich for this game.
Pritchard sold to Hudds, which is a blow for Norwich.
I expect them to continue with the 5 man defence, 5-2-3 defensively, 3-4-3 offensively.
Interesting to see if the pacy Murphy gets the nod as striker instead of the ineffective and lacklustre Oliveira.
Against the big centrebacks of Bristol, a small quick striker will likely work better than Oliveira.

Tom Trybull, the def mid, is not travelling, which is a blow. He is good in tandem with Tettey, but now Tettey will likely partner Stiepermann or Vrancic.

Hard game to predict. I don´t trust Norwich´upturn in form yet, and with Pritchard sold, even less.
Marginal home win is my guess, but I will not bet.

Gillingham look like the best bet in League One. 2.80 for a team in form, playing Rochdale who are in free fall.
Gills poor at home though, 2-7-4, but they are in good form now, best form of the season, and Rochdale has not won for ages. Massive value.

Bet365 with 5.5 on Plymouth, interesting odds. 5-2-0 form last 5 games for PLymouth. They were in the relegation zone recently, but have lifted themselves out of it, much with the help of on-loan Norwich keeper Remi Matthews, doing very well indeed.

Doncaster, their opponent, also doing well. Traditionally a decent home team, 5-5-3 so far, and 4-2-1 form.
Hard game for both. Maybe a draw coming?
I think 5.5 on Plymouth is worth a few pennies, for sure.

I also dont trust Norwich offensive capabilities but Macot got a point with Bristol . They must be distracted and City game should have an impact although they got a bad run and some sort of urgency is needed which is the reason i do not like to back overs with teams in bad run, they tend to be more foghting prone and put emphasis on result which makes the game ugly but Bristol style is not prone to that so they should go for 3 points and their defense offered no credit as of late so i think Norwich will score if they wont go on defensive mode cause they are defensive minded team.

I do like the over at Wolves. Logically they should take this as Barnsley is poor this year but odds offer little value if no value at all. Wolves is too good for this league and scoring 2 against this Barnsley outfit should be on the cards. They will miss defender Bath. Barnsley got a striker on transfer and they need it as they really struggle to score but they can be a challenge at home from time to time and their not scoring trend should reverse at one point.

Liking Derby win as well. Birmingham got some good results lately but against some crap teams. I still rate them as one of the poorest Championship teams. Derby is on a rise and played decent at Man U in FA Cup and they got good form. Decent odds for AW.

                        Agree on Derby, Sirac.

But odds is nothing special. 2.25 or thereabouts, and Birmingham kept clean sheets in both their recent hard-fought wins. X2 I think, but can´t decide on the X or the 2.
