Finally the Champions League starts again! These are the games (with odds) in the first round:

Man Utd - Panathinaikos - 1.30 - 4.60 - 8.90
Milan - Ajax - 1.55 - 3.40 - 6.20
Rangers - Stuttgart - 2.20 -3.20 - 3.00
Real Madrid - Marseille - 1.35 - 4.20 - 8.25
Partizan - Porto - 2.70 - 3.20 - 2.40
Besiktas - Lazio Roma - 2.70 - 3.05 - 2.50
Sparta Praha - Chelsea - 3.40 - 3.25 - 2.00
Club Brugge - Celta de Vigo - 2.20 - 3.25 - 3.00

There are a lot of inactive contestants with a bad score so far. I'm not even above zero at the moment, but my personal goal is just to end up with profit. A lot of things can happen, but the prices will probably go to 3 people on the upper half. Even if you have given up the hope for the top positions, continue to share your picks and try to finish the competition with dignity!

From this day, no new contestants can join. The aim is to post a number of 15 picks until September 30. I will maybe let some people post more than one pick the last weekend of this month, but try to post as many as you can in time.

I hope you check the standings with a regular basis. Sometimes I write personal messages there and it can be fun to check your position in the table.

Sparta-Chelsea AWAY @2.1

Sparta dissapointed a bit. Only 3:2 and 2:2 with quite poor Vardar? Mediocre performance in Gambrinus League. This is not the same team with Cech and Grygera that played so good some time ago in CL.

On the other hand - Chelsea have at least 3 players (Mutu, Crespo, Veron) who can win this game by themselves. And with help of Duff, Makelele, Hasselbaink, Geremi and Joe Cole, this should be clear away win.

At last there is topic... Tahoma, can you make topics earlier? Some of us got to sleep ;)

Wow, the hype about that match in Prague have been carved in stone by that quick 1st pick FiDu.

I'm gonna go for Champions League as well where I expect Real Madrid to start their campaign in style.

Real Madrid-Marseille (0-1) 1 @ 1.95

Raul looks sharp and alongside Ronaldo this one is bound to be flooded by Real-goals...

Partizan v Porto:2 (2.4GB)

IMO Porto plays fantastic football and i will trust my money on Decko,Der lei,Jankauskas,Capucho...Partizan may have fanatic fans but the team has no experience in the competition and experience is very important.I dont think that they pose a threat to a Porto side that has proved till now that can beat almost every opponent at his own ground(last year Panathinaikos-Porto:0-2)

Sparta vs Chelsea, Crespo to score anytime @ 2.37

I'll have some of this Chelsea hype and take Hernan Crespo to open his Chelsea account in the Champions League. He was awesome for Inter in this competition last season and has plenty of experience at this level. He will be the target for the attack to aim at and should have at least 2 or 3 chances if not more. I think the Argentinan link with Veron and Crespo will be especially beneficial as they Veron will look for his compatriot more often than not. Plenty of creative players to make chances for him and he is good enough to make them himself.

I was too busy last week to post picks, but now i'm back into competition. I hope I'll find good picks for the rest of the month.

Casabel snatched my pick just before my nose. :) Well, never mind, because now I'll go for a safer option.

Partizan - Porto 0:0 (level ball) 2 @ 1,80

I was so angry to myself (and Newcastle, of course :)) for lost bet against Partizan in 3rd round of CL qualifications and I said I'll never bet against this team again. But, I can't help myself. I really think they are not team for big achievements. Yes, they have few good, talented players (Ilic above all), but still they lack organisation and experience for this level. In my opinion, in qualification rounds they showed they can't handle the pressure - they haven't achieved good results at home, in front of big crowd who had high expectations. On the travels, when no one expected them to succeed - they did the job. Now, I don't think they will be under pressure - just playing in CL is big stuff for them - but still I think I can "trust" them not to win. They play without regular goalkeeper Kralj (injury), which I don't consider as big loss as he is error-prone, but his replacement Radakovic is not so experienced. Also solid defender Malbasa is suspended.

Porto, on the other hand, is one of teams that can go to the final stages of CL. They won UEFA Cup last season - I watched few of their games then and I was amazed with their "total football". I remember Celtic couldn't breath under their pressure in the whole field. If they play in the same way today, I doubt Partizan can handle this. Few stars of the team (Deco, Costinha, Aleinitsev), who haven't play in last league game, are back in a team.

I really can't see Porto losing today. Away win was my first pick, but odds for level ball are still good. Pinnacle have level ball @ 1,89 which is quite good, imo.

Good luck!

From all the Champions League matches the safest bet seems to be Rangers vs VfB Stuttgart Under @ 1.85 since the German team hasn't conceded one single goal during this year in Bundesliga and the price of under seems to be really challenging...Rangers don't have the super attack(I hope Sota Arveladze's scoring streak won't go on)as we saw in the matches against Copenhagen...and it will be really difficult to score more than once...that match is the first one for the Germans in Champions League and they will be really careful defending...

I've never quite gotten over the one time I managed to pick 6 draws from a CHampion's League round and make a combo out of them. The best part was that I was dead broke at the time and that pay-off came in real handy :)
And since I'm trailing a little in the rankings and, let's face it, early on in this 'league' there's sometimes more important not to lose then it is to win.

So I've stuck with two teams relatively fresh in these occasions, Club Brugge - Celta Vigo halftime X @ 2.00.
Both teams have had so-so starts and both teams had far from good results this weekend - guess why! They were preparing for this game, and then I think it's a big possibility that they will be careful early on and a 0-0 standing after 45 mins is probable.
Big chance for a draw all together and I considered to take that but I really feel like trying to end my poor run, so it's probably gonna be
2-0@HT and a Celta comeback for 2-2 in the end 8O

Brugge-Celta Draw @HT 2,00 and I think that's a very good bet.

0/6 - I feel like i'm cursed  Still, i believe i can finish positive this game (maybe too optimistic :) ).Looks like every body will take Porto today (good luck guys :D ), but since i'm a little late i will pick here another interesting game.

Rangers - Stuttgart 1-1 @ 3.4

We all know how well Stuttgart is doing in domestic championship, they haven't even conceded a goal :!: , but, imo their luck 's gonna change from tonight.First CL game for the Germans, both team have realistic chances to go into the 1/8 finals (PAO,Man U), so will go into this match with great expectations. What lacks the German squad is one of the most important things in this competition - international experience. Not just they never played CL, they also have very young players. What is good for Stuttgart is that their defensive style doesn't suit Rangers.About the Blues - they lost two important platers this summer : their captain Barry Ferguson who has good replacements De Boer and Arteta, and influential Lorenzo Amoruso who could be missed - both to Blackburn.Rangers have good home record in euro competition, maybe because their league is pretty weak and all of their atention is on euro games.I think they have enough offensive power to brake young guns from Stuttgart.

Partizan - Porto X @3.20

First I must say that I am Red Star fan, so I am not subjective. And I am not so sure about Porto's win here. Yes they are great team, but I can asure you: Fighting and runing you have seen from Partizan in Newcastle...., it will be nothing comparing to their perfomance today. And yes, besides that, they have quality too. That German guy is not maybe experience coach, but he brought for sure two things in Partizan:
Authority and Discipline. And if you mix it with several pretty good players (especialy Ilic and Drulovic), 30.000 fans and unbelievable atmosphere in the stadium, you can get some damn good coctail. Partizan for sure can make upset to Porto. However, I don't think they have quality to win(especialy cause they lacking some good striker), but even that result for me wouldn't be surprise. So..draw is my choice.

Milan vs Ajax 1 @1.55

Rematch of last year! Last year Milan won in the last minute, but this time it's gonna be a different story cause Ajax dont have Chivu,Van der Meyde and Mido in their team (all of those were first team last year)! Milan however have improved their sqad by addin Pancaro and Cafu ! Champions of Europe willl not have problems in this one!!! Clear home win!

Djape took the AC Milan @1.55 so i play this bet :

AC Milan by 1 goal @3.60

Last year, AC Milan won a lot of game 1-0
and Ajax had a good defence in the champions league's games 02-03.

I was really surprize by poor performance of Sparta Prague in the previous games with Vardar, they conceded too many goals, now a real offensive power comes hungry into Prague... Chelsea

Chelsea are in not so bad form (scoring a lot) and the main thing that Mutu is in an excellent form and i really beleive that they will trash Sparta today.. if Chelsea score first goal, Sparta will have to atack more and that will give quick Chelsea forwards additional space... hence the pick

Sparta Praha v Chelsea 1:0
Pick Chelsea @ 3.3

I really like the pick, coz i dont see Chelsea not winning this.. if they win i wont loose my bet for sure... and a very good chance they win by 2 or more goals.. so i win with them...

Millwall - Wimbledon Home win @ 1.62

Millwall is going for promotion this year, and with their terrific home crowd should not lose any points to Wimbledon.

Their new striker Peeters immediately found the good form and is very enthusiastic in the Belgian press about the Millwall home crowd. Who am I not to believe him? He says they'll win, so they will.

England - 1. Division, Sheffield U v. Rotherham, 1, odds 1.62

Shefield United are one of the strongest teams in 1. division. Rotherham in bad form at the moment, two home defeats and no goals scored (0-2 to Crewe and 0-3 to Wigan). Home team should win this match.

I am going for a "non-commercial" pick today:

Rangers (0) - VfB Stuttgart (1/4) - A - 1.90

I have been monitoring Rangers and i hate their style of play. Since the results at the first five rounds say nothing to me due to their strength diff at their league, i have to wait for "serious games" at CL. Rangers have some injury problems that might be affect today the team in the field, while Stuttgart has a game-style which yells "i know what i want". The german's haven't conceded a goal till now at Bundesliga and i think they r capable at least to get a draw.

Good luck to all of u.

my POD goes for;

AC Milan - Ajax ; Take DRAW @3.40

I did not like MILAN's and also AJAX's league matches...
I find both teams still not ready..
MILAN will just be happy here with 3 points... But sure is they are not good enough to beat AJAX easily...
AJAX will be happy with a draw ... And they are good enough not to lose against MILAN...
I see a score like 1-1 here..
HT DRAW seems to be a perfect bet too..

AC MILAN's midfield is better than last year. But a midfield needs time to be better and better.. KAKA can control all the offence.
But AJAX is surely the good underdog today..

I never like matches @1.40 that have big probability to end UNDER 2.5
I see this match to end 2-1 or 1-1 ..

But i take the DRAW and maybe will cover my real bet for both MILAN and AJAX to win with 1 goal difference...

Let's kick emm all !!!

Today I'll skip the CL because there's no espcially good bet left and Chelsea already taken with all possible ways.

Brentford - Blackpool Home Win @ 2.35

Brentford's 1st choice keeper returns from suspension but Michael Dobson remains doubtful with a knee injury and defender Andrew Frampton is definitely out.

Former Everton player Keith Southern hoping to make his 1st start of the season after making a susbstitute appearance last weekend. Gareth Evans also expected to play but the bad news are that Mike Flynn (calf) is out for six to eight weeks, while Tommy Jaszczun (ankle), John Murphy (thigh) and Danny Coid (back) are all ruled out.

Nov 2, 2002 Brentford - Blackpool 5 - 0
Nov 3, 2001 Brentford - Blackpool 2 - 0

Also Brentford has won 5 of last 6 games against Blackpool!

Good luck all

Champions League`s starting today, so here`s my pick for good ole English Div.1. :P

Wigan v WBA, under 2.5 goals @ 1.85

League leaders WBA travel to second placed Wigan. This game has all the characteristics of a derby, not only because of the standings, but also because both sides employ a physical direct style of play, with very tight and well organised defences and they share an attitude to win games by the lowest of margins (1:0).
Wigan kept a clean sheet in 4/6 of its games, while WBA won three games by 1:0 and three by 4:1 (against weaker opposition).

I predict the two teams to cancel out each other in a very balanced game with both defences holding for much of the time, and finally to be decided by a single goal.

Weity
16-09-03, 09:55
Real Madrid - Marseille - Real to win by two goals or more @ 1.95

I believe that Real will continue with strong performances like they did in last round of spanish league when they beat Valladolid 7-2. :!: I think Marseille probably won't score any goals and Real should be able to score at least 3 times and that would be enough even if Marseille score 1 goal.

This game is a clear over 2.5 goals banker for me but the odd is not that high as this one so I go for this kind of bet this time.

Manchester Utd v Panathinaikos 0:1 Hdcp
1.90 3.60 3.00

My pick is : Manchester Win 1.9 Hdc GB

So, about this match. Firstly, I am from Greece and big fan of PAO. PAO is a strong team and when plays in CH LEAGUE is a strong opponent and especially for big european clubls. Bookies always underestimate my team when plays in CH LEAGUE and that is a big mistake. But this time is not.

PAO this year is not the team of the past years. Strong defence which was my team's main reason for having very good perfomance last years , this year is much much weeker. You will see that in the game

Also, the second main reason that PAO having got positive results from big teams in the past was that players have passion in their game and would not afraid anyone. No matter the name of the club they played, they would win if underestimate their capabilities. But, not this year. this year unfortunately this passion gone so:
Playing with such a big team at OLD TRAFORD , a team with such an ability to score I predict a big shame today for my team. I will be happy losing with less than 3 goal difference.

I hope being wrong this time, I hope it so much..

Manchester Utd v Panathinaikos  0:1 1/2 ; Pick: Manchester @1.90

Manchester United has ruled over Premiership in the last 10 years. They have won CL several years ago and have very experienced players in this Competition. They stand second in Premier League with 3 wins an a loss. Ruud van Nistelrooy is one of the best strikers in the world.

Panathinaikos has won both games in championship so far: 1-0 at home with Xanthi and 3-1 away with OFI (last place in the table).

I don't know a lot about the greek side, but i know about Manchester.

The Red Devils will have no problem in winning this one with at least two goals.

No, you posted the pick five minutes before i did. So, your's is more VALID than mine.

Since my pick no. 2 on Sunday didn’t count (I’ve read the rules carefully now  ), and my favorite for today- Partizan –Porto X, has been already taken, I am going on “Plan B”… and that is:

PICK NO.2: REAL MADRID- OL. MARSEILLE, OVER @ 1.60

I have chosen this one, mainly on the last weekend’s games basis. Real smashed Valladolid with 7-2, and Olympic M. furiously won against Le Mans 5-0! I expect an open game here, too, and that is the reason for me picking OVER!

Good Luck!!!

Club Brugge v Celta de Vigo 0: 1/4 PICK Home @ 1,8

Club Brugge was a big suprise throwing out the germans
Now has first game at home vs a team which till now has shown nothing
at Primera.

Home advantage for Club vs a Celta which will play without playmaker Mostovoi, Catahna and some other key players.

Full squad for brugge will attack for a win, small fear of a draw so i take asian.

Good luck to All

I have chosen
David Beckham to score anytime @3.00

I think that that Marseille will be quite rude and Real will have lots of chances to score from standart situations. Though there is Roberto Carlos, I think that some of good efforts will be made by Beckham and he will score his goal. Also, Beckham is one of the best goalscorers form the game, so I fancey on this guy.

Good luck to all

Club Brugge v Celta de Vigo
2.10 3.25 3.15

PICK: 1

I think that Brugge is better then Celta.

All Celta strikers are injured, only Milosevic is fit.

Brugge won Dortmund, and they are better than Celta. On home ground play Brugge very good, and I don`t think that Celta can take them a point.

Plus Mostovoi will all be missing this game, and he is best Celta player!!

My pick for today will be:

Sparta Praha - Chelsea over 2.5 @ 1.85

Chelsea have great forwards and attacking midfielders and they usually score a lot of goals. But they play too open football and their defence make a lot of mistakes. Sparta's attackers can well take advantage of this. And on the other side Sparta's best defender Sdenek Grygera is missing the game so a chance for Chelsea forwards :). So I am sure that there will be a lot of goals in this game.

Since most of you already have taken Real,Man utd,Chelsea and Millwall,I must choose something else:

Hammarby-Djurgarden X @3.33

This is big match in Sweden, and Djurgarden plays without their two top stryckers Den Ouden and Stefanidis!

Djurgarden is not so good as they were in the beginning of the season, while Hammarby is strong side capable of creating big troubles to Djurgarden.

Guests hardly conciede and they can't score too many without their best stryckers,so for me this is good bet and odds were tempting, that's why I took it!

Pilsen to beat Ceske Budejovice @1,7

Pilsen were impressive at first game home against favourite Pardubice beating them 4-1. They played good in lost away game against Trinec. This leads me to conclusion that Pilsen team is well prepared for the season. Their today's opponent quite contrary- lost 2 games and,as I read some racaps, were pretty poor.

Champions League

Club Brügge-Celta de Vigo UNDER 2.5 goals @1.85

The first couple of games in champions league, and the first leg in cups like the UEFA-cup, World Cup, etc... is often rather tight and low scoring, so I expect many low scoring matches and a lot of draws in the first round of Champions League. The teams are all equal at the start and don't really have to push forward. Many teams just prefer to play it safe and just defend tight and avoid stupid mistakes, and when you fall behind in the standings, then you have to start taking risks. This is how it generally works, and I don't expect anything else today.

Brügge have got a good start in the Belgian League, and seem to have a solid defence. Celta on the other hand have had an awful start in the spanish league, but they concede few goals and are quite known for their defensive play. I think a worried Celta will go to Belgium to get a draw, and the Belgians will surely hope for a diffrent result, but I still think that they also will accept a draw, and in case either team will score, they will for sure just defend their lead and then counter attack, that's why I think there's a good probabilty of few goals in this game.

Hi,my pick for today is:

RANGERS - STUTTGART X (3,2)

Stuttgart no concieved goals in 4 bundesliga matches.
Rangers scored 15 in 4 matches.I believe that Bundesliga
is stronger than Scottish premier and Rangers will not easily
get in chances to score.Croatians Soldo and Vranjes wil be
too strong for Rangers attackers. So I think that this is 0:0 game.

Besiktas(0)-Lazio(0) 2 Odds:1.77

I was late today but i found out nobody took Lazio 8O
So i think asian HC 0 is very very good bet for today.
Besiktas plays good at home and has a good team this year so thats why i didnt take away win without HC. Lazio in great form and looking to make something this year in the CL. Besiktas has some injury problems lazio only without Mihajlovic..yea like that matters
Lazio has more quality and i think that will show in this match.

Dinara Safina vs Jelena Dokic @ 2.27

First, let's see Dokic's recent performance. From 8 of her last tournaments (all on hard courts), she never defeated more than one opponent! In the earlier tournaments she got byes so that she can still go deeper, otherwise I believe she would not go past the 2nd round. On the other hand, her opponent, Safina, got a good result in US open. Although just like Dokic, she was ousted in the first round of the last tournament, but it wasn't a very bad 3-set loss against the local hero, Widjaja compared to a straight set loss by Dokic against Garbin.

Dokic just defeated Jankovic in the first round, so I expect the "at most one win" by Dokic in the last 8 tournaments to continue, especially because Dokic still plays nowhere near her best.

Note for Tahoma: According to GB, game will start 10.5 hours from now, but Shanghai Open has a very messy schedule, so I hope it can still count if there is a slight change of schedule especially because it is quite close to the 10.00 deadline. In case of one-day delay, I will post again tomorrow.

AC Milan v Ajax Amsterdam HT 1 @2 (home win already taken)

For the AC Milan begins the title defence on Tuesday with the game against Ajax. Milan started good in the season with 2 victories in the Serie A as well as the Uefa-SuperCup success against the FC Porto (1:0). Especially strong on the side of the Milan shows the striker duo Andrij Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi that scored all Milan strikes up to now, Inzaghi was furthermore successful with a hat-trick for Italy against Wales. At the weekend triumphed Milan at home against Bologna with 2:1, in spite of that Milan had a little trouble with the defensive visitors, Inzaghi released Milan 5 minutes before end of the game.
The Dutch men were in the last season one of the surprises in the Champions League, for the young team of Ronald Koeman was first in the quarter final the stop - against Milan, after a goalless draw in Amsterdam triumphed Milan at home with 3:2. Similar to Milan also Ajax has an impress start into the new season, in the Dutch Ehrendivision they lead sovereignly with 4 victories from 4 games and won at the weekend against RKC Waalwijk with 4:1. In the summer were sold some key players, however, Ajax is known for their good young talents.
Ajax will be play as usual defensively, also in the San Siro, therefore it will become not simple for Milan, however, I am convinced of a narrow home victory of the Italians, because no one can eliminate Inzaghi 90 minutes.

Per, are you sure that halftime draw gives 2.00? I was thinking of that same pick and gamebookers offred it at 2.50(!?)

Yes I am, I placed a bet on it myself earlier today and that was what I got paid.
Don't mean to be rude but I think it is unlikely that GB's would have raised the price 25% in a few hours today so I fear you have looked at the wrong game?

I agree, it would be very strange if they raised that odds with 25%, I guess I must have looked in the wrong column or something, too much tension before that derby perhaps... :(
