View Full Version : Over 0.5 goals (per match) strategy
Hi all,
This strategy may seem similar to the "To score/not to score" but it goes a step beyond by just trying to guess if a "single goal" will be scored in a match.
Bookie: Betfair
Events: Football matches with the "Total goals" market (those In-Play)
Bet: "Total 1 goal or more"
Initial bank: 100 units
Stake: Variable and only limited to the available bank.
The strategy has already been running for over a month in a Spanish speaking forum and just decided to make it available for a wider audience, using english. The link to the topis is: http://www.forobet.com/foros/viewtopic.php?t=2596
In-Play matches are the only ones with this bet ("Total goals") available and that's the reason to choose these matches (not all of them).
The bet will only be paid at the end of the match, so the number of simultaneous matches to bet on, is limited to a combination of the stakes used and available bank.
Another reason for using the "In-Play" matches was the possibility of coming into the match after watching for a certain period of time ... but I later discarded this possibility as this might lead to error. Though I, for example, entered the Barcelona-Mallorca match after 3 minutes of play, after previous matches had been paid (Barcelona did not score till min 26)
At present the result of the strategy is:
Initial bank: 100 units
Current bank: 396.01 units
W-L-N: 71-2-2
Current W streak: 28 (40 was the initial)
The 2 Null matches are:
Mboro v Liverpool. I wanted to watch some minutes of this match before betting, and Liverpool was so reluctant to play I decided to skip.
Mainz v Keflavik. I wanted to wait for higher odds but Mainz scored at the very beginning of the match, so betting was no longer an issue
The 2 lost matches are:
Watford v Reading
QPR v Sheff Wed
Incredibly the 2 mistakes come from the English "League Championship" on Aug 26th and Aug 27th.
3 other matches had goals after 90 minutes had been played so if you are prone to heart attacks ... this may not be your strategy (Wigan v Chelsea, Deportivo v Atl Madrid and Bochum v H Rostock)
Being this my first "Betting Strategy" post I hope everything is in place and nothing is left out. Giving that this is an already "running" strategy I guess a list of the already announced matches would be appreciated, though a link to the "Spanish topic" is already available. Could any moderator give me a hint about all this ?

I am interested to see all of your picks because as I see you bet on spanish and english games which is not very good idea in my opinion. For instance I layed Over 0.5 goals in Deportivo-Atletico and only this lucky goal in the last seconds killed my pick. For laying 0:0 you should look for Over teams and teams with weak defence. For instance Atletico Madrid and Chelsea are the most Under teams with the most solid defence. They are not good fot laying 0:0. English lower divisions are full of villagers who have no idea about fooball. They just kick the ball and run all the game. French teams defend hard too. Portuguese too.
I think the best places for laying 0:0 are Holand, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Turkey... Simply the leagues where the odds for Over 2.5 are low. Of course odds for 0:0 will be high in these leagues but you will be pretty sure that your pick will win.

I chose the "Total goals" market for its liquidity, whereas laying the 0-0 correct score may happen or not (backing up to 14-15000€ is easy for the Total 1 goal or more market).
Reading the threads I guess I was lucky to have an initial winning streak of 40 matches which later allowed for two almost consecutive mistakes (which is obvious noone is free from).
Regarding the election of english and spanish matches. I do carefully consider every single match even in the case involving Atletico de Madrid. Being an Atletico supporter I know they are a clear "under team" but I thought Deportivo would score sooner than they did, and in my opinion Atletico deserved no less than 3 or 4 goals. See that I let the Alaves-Barcelona match (opening game for Spanish league) away, avoiding a 0-0 result. I watched Alaves several times and gave them good chances to keep a clean sheet.
I look for weak defenses, strongs attacks but add a bunch of "situational analysis" for matches where scoring is a must for one or both teams.
The teams/leagues involved in picks are those I can watch and judged by myself. Betfair has the Greek and Italian league, but I don't watch those two, as oppossed to the Swedish, english, scottish, spanish, german, some french some norwegian and some portuguese matches I watch (may that be the reason to be single ? ;) )
Turkey, Holland, Denmark is no option in this strategy as only "In-Play" matches qualify (the only ones with the "Total goals" market), and yes I also have them qualified as scoring leagues. So I have to restrict to the leagues/national squads I can watch and bet on.

I see Milan trying to secure as many home wins as possible (like all teams) but with a greater potential than Fenerbahce.
Lyon v Real Madrid
Lyon fighting an unpredictable team. Will Madrid score 5 or be scored 5?. Ronaldo is not playing but given his current condition (not good in my opinion), he is not that vital. And Lyon will look for a goal ...
Olympiakos v Rosenborg
Rosenborg is well known for being an easy team this season and greek teams love to play at home with a cheering crowd. I see this as another scoring game.

I read all and I can only congratulate you - for a month only to quadruple your initial bank - wonderful! :)
And I like when people often watch the football games which they bet on.
For instance I watch every weekend 3-4 spanish, 2 german, 3-4 english, 2 french and 1-2 italian games and it helps much.
Many bettors in this forum don't watch many games, I am sure, they just read many team news, who is injured, who will be absent etc and can't understand that this doesn't help them for betting :lol:

Betfair - Total goals. Odds usually are between 1.05 and 1.09. Except straight betting on 1 goal you can also lay 1 goal /if you think that there will be no goal for a long time during the game/ and then to bet on it with higher odds. :)
The highest odds I chose (and found) was 1.12 for the Valenciennes-Bastia (French Ligue2, usually Live on Eurosport France)
As Aragorn mentioned the normal range is 1.05-1.09. Bundesliga matches tend to start at 1.04, and is not so strange to find 1.10 odds in matches which I tend to consider very suitable for the strategy.
Thanks for the congratulations Aragorn, but only long term may give credit to this strategy. Without the 2 almost consecutive losses the bank would already be 629.67 units.
But it would be not logical to think that no other mistake will be made or several ones in a short period of time. My long term aim is to get this strategy running till the end of the European season getting as close as possible to the 500 matches picked, to see where the bank finally is. The bank may vanish before of course.

As with W Bremen, a high scoring german team, though Makaay was out last game, they still managed to overcome an early goal playing away. And Rapid does also like scoring ...
Sparta Prague v Ajax
I've been surprised by the odds of this game for this Over 0.5 .... The match odds indicate people do expect it to be pretty balanced, but that does not imply a 0-0 result. I can't imagine a team like Sparta not trying to take a chance to qualifying, specially by letting points go away when playing home, and that means goals.
W Bremen v Barcelona
High scoring german team playing home against a scoring Barcelona which could easily take advantage of fast counter strikes ... should not be a miss

They are always singles, and would never make combos out of this as a single draw (and it can happen anytime) may ruin an entire afternoon, instead of ruining a single match. Just my personal view.

Yes 100 units per match to get around 4-12 units back (usually around 6-8 ).
Low odds -> high stake.
It's of course tough when a miss shows up, but the reasoning behind the strategy is that not many misses will be taken due to the high probability of a goal being scored.
Not all available matches are chosen and I try hard to avoid dangerous matches, but any (any any any) match cand end up being a 0-0 draw. Some may agree with the matches and leagues I choose and some may not, your mileage may vary with your own analysis.
This is a long term study (as such I see it) so try the strategy carefully please.

Camel, excuse me if I don't discuss picks. I don't think this is the right place for such a thing. The target of this thread (at least my target) is to show the possible profitability of low odds by adding some constraints: only soccer, only over 0.5 goal per match.
Low odds are regarded as losing odds sooner or later. Given that odds are set according to probabilities based on past results I thought that by filtering some of the matches out of the list (Liverpool-Manchester is a crystal clear example) I think low odds could end up being profitable.
I think discussion for Milan - Lazio (where I think more than 1 goal will actually be scored) should be happening in the Italian Soccer subforum.
As I read your posts in other strategy threads, I guess you are pretty new to betting and let me suggest that you should take it easy and avoid thinking that this or any other strategy might be good or profitable before long term results have been compiled.
Adn even with good past performances any strategy can easily turn into a losing one.
This particular strategy is currently at a very early stage ... so be very careful if you decide to undertake it as the base of your betting system.

Over 1.5 is also present at Betfair for In-Play matches (Total goals 2 or more) and for English Premiership with specific Over 1.5 goal.

I made no stats of such. Over 1.5 (recalling my memory) does usually start somewhere between 1.15 and 1.25.
The 0.5 system started with 100 units and is over 300 units ... seems to be "plus".

good luck with this strategy for me personally i dont have the patience with it and additionally i would be annoyed as soon as one of them lost. But hope it works, although if your gonna make money from betting you might want to try something else also, for instance lay the underdogs :wink:

This is not my main betting strategy, not even my preferred sport for betting, but the strategy is based upon a couple of solid rules and I just wanted to test whether this is feasible in the long term.
