Sporting Clube de Portugal followed their victory at Middlesbrough FC in the UEFA Cup Round of 16 first leg by sliding to a surprise home defeat against FC Penafiel at the weekend.
Two second-half goals were enough to defeat Sporting's challenge and dent their hopes of landing the Portuguese SuperLiga title. They currently lie fourth with 42 points, six behind SL Benfica.
Custódio and Fábio Rochemback missed the Penafiel game through knee and thigh injuries respectively, but both should return to the side for the return game with Middlesbrough on Thursday. In addition it is hoped that Brazilian defender Anderson Polga will prove his fitness in training this week.
Middlesbrough have had more time to prepare for the return game as they were without a Premiership fixture at the weekend and believe they still have a good chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

Vital strikes
After watching Joseph-Desiré Job and Chris Riggott score late goals to cut Sporting's advantage to 3-2, manager Steve McClaren said: "Of course we can do it. There was enough evidence to suggest we can score goals next week.
McClaren will travel with more confidence should both George Boateng and Mark Viduka be available for selection. Boateng has had an injection to speed up his recovery from a broken toe while Viduka has returned to training after picking up a hamstring injury in December. In addition, Ray Parlour should return after a back injury.

I can't imagine any outcome but over 2.5 goals for this match. M'boro is motivated and i think they're gonna score at least a goal and 0-1 is still not enough for them, so they will keep on attacking. Lisbon has not got a solid defence and they will try to score too.

After loosing from Penafiel 0:2, I`ll never bet on any Portuguese team  . In the previous round I`ve got luck with 12 games, but this was the last one :( .... (btw Porto made the bigger sh*t vs. Nacional 0:4; the next step was out of CL  ).

So, I hope Boro are very motivated for this match; maybe not playing so well as a guests, but they don`t have any other chances, if they want to do something this season; they just have to win this game.
I`ll put some money on Boro to win. Boro in the next round - I think it`s possible and fair.

I read that Fabio Rochemback is unfit and will probably not play.

Can someone tell me how important is he to the team...is he an attacking or holding midfielder?
I know he is someone the team needs, as he likes to waste time when his team is winning

no offence :P

Thanks

I really can't see any way that Boro can avoid defeat here.

They are in even worse shape than they were for the first leg.

Injury list: as usual - Ehiogu, Mendieta, Christie, Boateng, Viduka

Also - Morrison, Reizeger, Parlour, Hasselbaink

I'm sure McLaren would like to play an attacking line-up but he can't. He doesn't have enough trust in Nemeth, Job and Graham.

He'll probably play Doriva and Parnaby in midfield again. Both are way out of their depth at this level.

Only Downing, Zenden and maybe Job can be a threat.

Sporting at 1.9 is a fantastic price imho as a Boro fan.

Middlesbrough is without nine injured players who would ordinarily be in the squad - Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Mark Viduka, George Boateng, Michael Reiziger, Ray Parlour, Ugo Ehiogu, Gaizka Mendieta, Malcolm Christie and James Morrison.

I am seriously wondering how Sporting cannot win tonight, eventhough they don't have to...

Selection for Middlesbrough:

"Schwarzer, McMahon, Southgate, Riggott, Queudrue, Parnaby, Doriva, Zenden, Downing, Job, Nemeth, Jones, Cooper, McMahon, Graham, Wheater, Johnson, Bates."

Sporting will miss midfielders Fabio Rochemback and Custodio Castro who have both failed fitmess tests. There are also doubts over Brazilian duo Rogerio and Anderson Polga.

Can anyone tell me how important these absentees for Sporting are?

Thanks!

Sporting only won one game when they didn't have Custódio, Rochemback and Carlos Martins: the first game of the season, home against Gil Vicente. But now they have Carlos Martins back and things will be different, imo.

So, I think I can say they are important players. Custódio is a defensive midfielder, with good passing, never loses the ball. Rochemback almost never loses the ball, makes some great passes and dribles, and attacks more than Custódio. He also scores some goals from free kicks.

Polga is a good player, but Sporting has other good central defenders. His absence won't be felt, imo. Hugo had two disastrous games in the Superliga (he's guilty in the goal that gave Belenenses their 1-0 win; he's also guilty in both Penafiel goals). However he will be starting the match against Boro. I don't think he'll fail again. It would be too much in just 10 days.

Rogério is usually in the starting eleven, but against Penafiel Sporting played Mário Sérgio in his place and he was one of the best. He's an ex-u21 national team players, he's good. And now, he's motivated, so I don't think Sporting will feel Rogério's absence (not confirmed yet).

I would say that this is a game betweeen Sporting, that need to win in order to conquer their fans (very disappointed after the last two losses for the Superliga, that left them 6 points behind Benfica) and Boro with so many absences that I wouldn't recognise the team if it wouldn't be for their shirts. I would say that Sporting will win this one. They really need to boost their morale for monday's decisive game against FC Porto. In Portugal, newspapers showed that Sporting always have a good result in the UEFA Cup after a disappointing result in the Superliga. I think this trend will continue tonight. Boro will have to attack and Sporting will probably end up crushing them on the counter.

gamebookers removed the 1X2 for this game, let's see if they will re-offer it. Handicap, double chance etc. still available though.

I am interested to see how the match will develop, because Sporting always like to play attacking football at home, but today they dont have to, while Middlesbrough have to attack because they have to score atleast 2 goals. I think Sporting will know how to play Middlesbrough, well it will be interseting to see which way the match goes. Sporting shouldnt pressure Middlesbrough right away, they should let Middlesbrough make the play and then hit them on the counter-attack and the match will be in the bag.

Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren is without an array of stars for the return leg of his side's last-16 UEFA Cup tie with Sporting Lisbon at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Thursday.

McClaren flew out on Wednesday without Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Mark Viduka, George Boateng, Michael Reiziger, Ray Parlour and James Morrison, all joining long-term injured Ugo Ehiogu, Gaizka Mendieta and Malcolm Christie on the sidelines.

With Boro needing to win by two clear goals to progress to the quarter-finals following last week's 3-2 defeat at the Riverside, McClaren is likely to deploy Joseph-Desire Job and Szilard Nemeth in attack.
Sporting Lisbon have also been rocked by injury problems.
Coach Jose Peseiro will be without three key players for the game, with centre-back Anderson Polga unable to train for a week due to a muscular injury and midfielders Miguel Custodio and Fabio Rochemback declared unfit by club doctor Gomes Pereira.

Mario Sergio could be recalled to the first team to fill the hole left by the midfield duo if Peseiro, as usual, makes Brazilian Rogerio the natural option for the right side of the defence.

Teams
Middlesbrough (from): Schwarzer, McMahon, Southgate, Riggott, Queudrue, Parnaby, Doriva, Zenden, Downing, Job, Nemeth, Jones, Cooper, McMahon, Graham, Wheater, Johnson, Bates.

not much more to add

But I think a funny bet like over 4.5 or even 5.5 goals (if found) would have some value. I wouldn't be supprised if Sporting win 4-2 or 5-2 here.

Over 4.5 is 6.34 at Betfair.
Over 5.5 is 14.34 at Betfair.

Ever heared of multiple accounts? :) Personally I once had 3 accounts at one local bookie, who had crazy offers on some underdogs (especially on latin soccer), but really sucky limits, $25 and the like.

Then again $25 is huge bet for some people. When I just started, my bets were about $1 in size, for several months :P

Anyone watching the match? Any information please :?:

I was watching first half but then I switched off as I also took the Over...

Newcastle very defensive only on conterataques, sporting not able to creat chances. One big chance newcastle (cleared on line), nothing else.
