there should be one thread per league (nba, college, euro) per day, and if someone decides to open another, moderators should remove it

Not removed, but added to the thread started already.

Suppose the same users keep on opening threads on a daily basis (hypothetically of course) when there already is a thread. Would you still want the moderators to put that post into the thread (note that threads can be split, but merging is not possible, so it will require some time) that already existed? Or would you agree that if these kind of posters don't want to learn, their new posts will be removed if they keep on breaking the rules? My point of view is clear now, I think. I am hoping for a moderator that follows basketball more closely than me.
