from uefa.com background

Glasgow giants Rangers FC are hoping to end a 49-year wait for a first competitive victory in Italy as they visit AS Livorno Calcio's Armando Picchi Stadium for their opening UEFA Cup Group A tie.

• On the surface, it looks like a tough game for Livorno. The Italian side's only experience of European football to date came with their 3-0 aggregate win against Austrian side FCS Pasching in the UEFA Cup first round, having qualified for Europe for the first time with a sixth-placed finish in Serie A in 2005/06.

• By contrast, 1971/72 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners Rangers have played 242 games in European competition (winning 108, drawing 54 and losing 80), but they have not always enjoyed their best results against Italian opposition.

• In 20 meetings with Italian clubs since their 6-1 aggregate defeat against AC Milan in the first round of the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs' Cup, the Scottish side have won just five times, with their Serie A opponents triumphing on 12 occasions.

• More worryingly, ten trips to Italy have never brought them a victory - they have lost on nine occasions on Italian soil, drawing the other game.

• That draw, however, was a crucial one. Rangers earned a 1-1 draw against Torino FC in Turin on 8 March 1972 in the quarter-final of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and then won the second leg at Ibrox 1-0 to progress to the semi-finals.

• They went on to beat FC Bayern Mόnchen 3-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals en route to a 3-2 triumph against FC Dinamo Moskva in the final at the Camp Nou in Barcelona.

• Livorno's Lithuanian striker Tomas Danilevicius may have fond memories of Scotland having spent a short spell on loan with Dunfermline Athletic AFC during the 2000/01 season. However, he made just three appearances for the club and failed to make it on to the scoresheet.

• Group A's other Matchday 1 fixture sees Maccabi Haifa FC face AJ Auxerre in Israel.

To be honest I expected odds to be 1.65 or something. Just don't see a way how this Rangers can cope with one good Italian team as Livorno is nowdays in away match.

Raners have no chance here, they are rubbish at the moment and will finish 3rd or 4th in the SPL this season

Livorno 10/10 stakes.

I worry about 1 thing Livorno score only 6 goals in 6 league matches. At home they score 1 goal in 2 matches could anybody say how Glasgow is playing? I mean what is their tactics hard defend and play counter-attack or what ?

it say that on 19:00 livorno made a training sedute under the artificial lights lucarelli and paulinjo took part of that too. tomorrow livorno`s coach will make a large turnover and will change the team that won at ascoli in all the sectors. only Knezevic (dif) is not avaible for the uefa cup games because he has play with his old team in intertoto.
thats all .
i would wait for the line-up before bet but at these moment ranger is verypoor. they got beaten by poor caledonian on their home ground last saturday

Livorno coach is famous for rotation policy bu it turns into good so I wouldn t be worried but lets wait and see:)

Maybe they scored one goal at home in two matches, but they played with Fiorentina and won 1:0, and in second match with Milan 0:0. And from that games I don't see a problem but opposite.

If you had serious betting money, and personally I don't, I would be looking at one or two of the bookies who do a double result because there is no way rangers can win this, so a double result, draw no bet or draw/livorno win could seriously boost your account balance.
Whatever works out the best odds of those three bets take, as rangers don't have the fire power to win this and will come for a draw. This might be achieved if they play the keeper they dropped saturday who was on big form, or if livorno miss fire. The draw has small chance, the away win about one or two per cent. Still if you had big money you probably don't need my advice, in fact probably vice versa, I need yours.

celtic fan here

it's quite simple - rangers are in crisis at the minute. dont account for anything to do with the size or traditions of both clubs - paul le guen has failed to settle and his signings are being openly mocked in the papers over here. he has a 40% win ratio in the league and their goalkeeper got man-of-the-match at HOME when they beat Molde to qualify for the group stages.

in the game in norway i thought rangers were a certainty but lost €500

livorno at home are FAR stronger than Molde who matched Rankgers in both legs

not only that Phil Bardsley who is on loan from Man Utd was left at home after falling out with le guen. his deputy is alan hutton who frankly is Rangers' worst right back in recent history

defence is likely to be Hutton (very poor), Svensson (big reputation but has been dropped for alarmingly poor form), Rodriguez (making mistakes every week) and Smith (good going forward, suspect in defence)

it delights me to say that this is potentially the worst rangers back 4 going into a european game for 20 years

the rangers defence can barely shut out strikers from the lower half of the SPL so i expect Lucarelli to have a field day. plus Livorno's defence has been solid lately and rangers have problems up front - le guen keeps leaving out top goalscorer Kris Boyd who is an excellent finisher - can't see Rangers scoring at all

and therefore i expect livorno to win

please dont look at this as being biased - remember my bet on rangers to beat molde. i dont care about patriotic betting in favour of celtic/against rangers - it's all about the money.

9/10 bet for me

so maybe under goals?
it has better odds and seems 8-9/10 ?

I will change five or six players from Sunday

Livorno coach Daniele Arrigoni

As I wrote before Livorno coach is well-known for his rotation policy but IMO nothing to worry about he has wide squad to chose from at about the same level
any confirmation from Italy?

Okay guys I'm no expert on Scottish football and I have to admit that I didnt see any match Rangers played lately. I've been watching Seria A week in week out for a long time though.

Italian sides have often rested their players in the UEFA Cup until they get to the business end of the competition. The problem with Minnows Livorno is that they didnt finish in the position they are in right now, they were given a UEFA cup place because Juve, Lazio, and Fiorentina were ducked points from last season. I dont feel that this team has cover to play midweek every week.

Livorno have been in a good run lately and ther defence is solid just like last season. Their only loss came away to Roma in the first round, when Lucarelli was playing. I dont know in what shape will Lucarelli come back after about 3 to 4 weeks out, so that might be a problem.

I dont expect Livorno to lose based on what you say about Rangers, but they might have problems scoring on the first match for Lucarelli after the injury. Danilevicius and Bockayoko are good strikers however.

The point is, Livorno are not a UEFA cup place italian side, but they've got an ace in Lucarelli on their side. Plus they're an organized team. But Lucarelli is comming back from injury.

For me, 1.8 is very low in a match like this on Livorno. Maybe closer to 2. I think it gonna be close with a draw likely as well

I would back Livorno for odds like 1.8 or 1.85 for the win

Rangers are a big team and have some experience in this kind off games

With all their missing players and bad performance

a defensive tactic will be the only Solution for ranger's problems so 5-4-1 will be the best option to not lose this is not Milan not inter this is livorno and losing is a big problem to die hard fans

The Q is can livorno score with this kind off defensive tactics if yes I well go for the win if No under would be the best option

Best Regards

Come on Rangers!

That's the spirit. :D

As just about everyone has said Rangers are in a bad way just now and i can't see them taking anything from this game but the only hope i cling to is last seasons away draws at Porto and Villareal.

Hope the Livorno backers lose your money, especially the Celtic fan, but can't see it.

I told you guys, Italian teams dont give a **** about UEFA Cup. Livorno started with 4 of their regular players (one of them is the keeper and the second is Lucarelli comming back from injury).

They're down 1-3 already.  It should've been Fiorentina and Lazio instead of these teams that were facing regulation at some point last year like Livorno and Parma
