Rovers and Killester must meet again on Thursday night after playing out a scoreless draw in the quarter final of the Carlsberg FAI Cup last night (Sat 30 Sep) in the Showgrounds. Battling non-league side Killester United earned an unlikely home replay with eircom Premier Division side Sligo Rovers at The Showgrounds after surviving a pounding to claim a scoreless draw in the quarter-final of the FAI Carlsberg Cup.

Sligo Rovers: O’Hara, Burns (Peers 35), McNamara (c), MacKenzie, Hughes, O’Grady, Turner, Kudozovic (McTiernan 60), Singh, Judge (Aisien 88).
Subs not used: Brush, Mulligan, Coleman, Curran.

Killester United: Murphy, Dunne, Carrig, Murphy, Murphy (Murphy 70), Donnerry, Graham, Curley, O’Connell (Lacey 65), Keogh, Sheridan (McGrath 79).
Subs not used: Donohoe, Connors, Alguaidy, McLoughlin.

The Belfast native is now faced with a selection dilemma for the replay with Killester as he is set to be without 5 players from his squad. One of the casualties is defender Liam Burns, Connor said losing Burns in the first half of Saturdays game had a bad effect on the team
" It was a big blow. I think Liam Burns is the one player on the park we don't like to be without . I certainly don't like to be without him, he marshalls the back four, reads the game well and he keeps everyone on their toes. We knew going into the game Burnsy had a slight ankle problem . We've rested it and been looking at it for the last two weeks but he is now going to need intensive treatment and he is probably going to be out for two to three weeks. Darren Manseram is a definite doubt for the replay, he has a groin injury and I would say he will be out for a week to ten days. Michael McNamara has strained his thigh, it is enough of a strain that if he was to play he would potentially tear it and pull it. If we were to treat it right he is probably out for seven to ten days, if he plays on it and gets injured he is out for 6 weeks. It is a decision I have to make as a manager.Add to that Brian Cash and Sean Flannery and that’s 5 players out.

With 5 players out Rovers are struggling to field 16 senior players and maybe have to call on the likes of the inexperienced John Bellew, Sean Kelly and Emlyn Mulligan or re jig the side and play some players out of position to fill in.

"That is why at the start of the season I argued over the size of my squad and people think "Oh you are doing well", maybe the size of my squad will come back to haunt me"

Looking ahead to Thursday night Connor is hopeful his team will learn from their wrong-doings last Saturday and book their place in the semi final and that they will be able to handle the increased pressure that is now on them to do just that

"The game isn't over. They will fancy their chances down in Dublin. I am sure they will have a bigger crowd. It is at Tolka Park thankfully so that should help us. They didn't really hurt us but they had enough about them to make it difficult. They were never just going to come down and roll over. Can they continue that into Thursday? I don't know.

Well, i must say that i am very intereseted for this game as i wannt to place 100$ on Sligo. There must be some quality deference between this two teams.

Any comments?

First game report :
http://www.rte.ie/sport/2006/0930/sligo.html
Sean Connor's men dominated the game on their home patch but came up against a determined Killester side that repeatedly threw themselves in front of the ball at the last minute to deny Rovers a berth in the the semi-finals.

Connor reveals Killester “respect”:

“If I am honest, their goal lived a charmed life. A couple hit their keeper that he did not know about but that is cup football. That is probably what makes cup football so exciting. We live to fight another day, it could be worse, we could be sitting here out of the cup.”

Killester United is amateur team and there is big quality difference. Dublin City club pulled out of competitions and that way Killester came to last 8 thanks to bye. Game is played at Tolka Park which is Shelbourne ground (probably Killester wants to sell more tickets that they would be able on their own ground) , so there is no homeground advantage. Brian Cash and Sean Flannery are long term injuries, best scorer Darren Manseram missed first game too, but it seems that because of thin squad missing of both central defenders Liam Burns and Michael McNamara is big blow for Sligo Rovers. I was planning going big on Sligo thinking it is not possible for Killester to keep clean sheet for 180 minutes. I still think it is impossible, but with two key defenders out for Rovers I see possibility of Killester scoring one, so Sligo then should score two which might be hard job with 10 opposite players being behind the ball for 90 minutes. So it is not banker in my eyes anymore, more like combo material. Odds in range of 1.40-1.45 looks too good versus amateur side to be missed. It certainly would be helpful to here another opinion here on forum.

Well, a very difficult match to predict, definitely. I think of under in this game. Yes, Sligo will miss both central defenders - but that might be a reason for a more careful style of play, when the team should help the defence. Also Killester will probably play the same way they played the first match. When you read Killester's trainer comments, he would like to win this match in the regular time because he is aware Sligo players dispose of better fittness. According to the forecast there will not be a very pleasant weather in the evening, that will not help either.
